Back to back matches against Olympic saw mixed fortunes for the Glenavon team.

The first match at the Glen, was a close game with both sides very competitive in the middle of the park as neither could seize control of the game, and with few chances in the first half.

The second half saw Glenavon pass the ball around to better effect, and begin to open up the visitors defence. The only goal of the game came 10 minutes from the end with Danny Lamb winning the ball well in midfield. He played it up to Callum Mernock who pushed the ball behind the defence for Aaron Steen to show his lighting pace to run the ball a good 30 yards and slot the ball home under the keeper.

A late chance to Jimmy Howe went just wide of the post but the team controlled the last few minutes to win the game.

The reverse fixture at Arrowe Park saw the boys totally dominate the game on a full size pitch. Some tremendous overlap play by Ben Eastwood, Alex Jones and Steve Ainslie saw Glenavon camped out in the home team box, but sadly fail to convert the chances that fell to them. Aaron Steen, Jimmy Howe, Danny Lamb and Callum Mernock all went close.

The heat and the size of the pitch took its effect on both teams in the second half, and disappointingly the only goal of the game came from one of Olympic's few excursions into the Glenavon half.

Despite late attempts the equaliser did not arrive, nothing was gained from a game the team dominated.

Man of the match awards went to Sean McAdam in the first game for his excellent defensive work, and Danny Lamb who has had an outstanding second half of the season and made the anchor role his own.

Glenavon Sink Rangers

27 Apr 2008

In a game played in torrential rain, and the Glen looking more fit for growing rice than playing football, the under 11’s produced a great performance to sink Wirral Rangers.

The game started well with the boys happy to get the ball down and play football on quite a slippy surface. With Alex Jones playing an excellent role as an overlapping full back Glenavon regularly got the ball into the penalty box and after 10 minutes were awarded a penalty for handball.

Callum Mernock picked up the ball and placed in on the spot, and with his dad hardly bearing to watch, hammered the ball confidently into the bottom corner.

The second goal came from good work on the right by Steve Ainslie who cross was perfectly placed into the roof of the net by Jimmy Howe. Yet again in the right place at the right time which has led to Jimmy becoming the leading goal scorer this season.

Just when things looked comfortable the home side let the ball bounce in the penalty area and it broke free to a Wirral player to poke home and reduce the lead to 2-1.

The response from the boys was excellent, no heads went down and they pushed straight back up field and from an Aaron Steen cross Callum Mernock headed the ball home for the third goal.

The visiting fans had only just took their heads out of their hands at the frustration of conceding a third goal when the forth arrived with the Mernock Steen combination working again for Aaron Steen to poach the forth goal from close range.

4-1 at half time soon became 5-1 when a long ball forward ran through the Wirral defence and Aaron Steen confidently tucked the ball away at the second attempt.

A second goal for Wirral could not spoil the result, or the opportunity for the home support to model their colourful wellies, and the team played out the final few minutes without further trouble.

In terrible conditions the boys played some excellent football and confidence was restored after the unjust score line of the midweek defeat to Delta Colts.

A great performance from all the boys, but special mention to Lewis Deery who stood in at full back, making one excellent saving tackle with the score at 1-0, and to Jake Malone and Danny Lamb for their non stop tackling.

Glenavon Cruise to Victory Over Jaguars

20 Apr 2008

Glenavon cruised to victory with a very professional demolition of Wallasey Wanderers Jaguars at the Delph.

With the Jaguars playing a high line offside trap it took Glenavon a period to adapt and from that point in the goal’s arrived at regular intervals.

The first came from a spectacular strike by Lewis Deery who crashed the ball home from just inside the box to begin the goal rush. The offside trap was then broken by Callum Mernock who ran onto a through ball, headed the ball past the keeper and Aaron Steen made sure by pushing the ball home.

The same partnership worked for goals three and four. A ball through the defence by Callum Mernock was confidently slotted home by Aaron Steen, and a flick on by Callum Mernock from a Steve Ainslie corner was slotted home for his hat trick by Aaron Steen.

After soaking up the early pressure at the start of the second half, they adapted to playing into the wind and a through ball from Alex Jones put in Jimmy Howe to confidently slide the ball under the Keeper for number five. Number six came when Steve Ainslie fired home from the six yard box after good work by Jimmy Howe.

Glenavon continued to push on, and following a goal being ruled out for offside, Aaron Steen got on the end of a Danny Lamb through ball to slot home his forth and Glenavons seventh

The final goal of the game came from Steve Ainslie who pushed the ball home after the keeper had made a good save from Callum Mernock's shot from the edge of the box.

A confident performance from the team, who for a few weeks now had threatened this kind of result, and on Sunday they finished the chances they created and by no means did the score flatter them.

Man of the Match went to Sean McAdam who again marshaled his defence well to ensure that Cieran Bryant in goal had a quiet day.

Upton

16 Apr 2008

Glenavon showed both sides of their ability, as well as experiencing a late postponement in the middle of both games.

The team failed to meet the high standards it had set itself last Tuesday by going down to the only goal against Future Stars, in a game of few chances.

The match was decided when the ball fell to a Future Stars striker who was unmarked and behind the last defender. He put the ball home whilst the home support waited for a whistle that never came.

A few half chances came and went, but this was just one of those nights.

The boys were denied the opportunity to put the result behind them when firstly fixture confusion saw Thursday’s game postponed, and a few days of solid rainfall saw Sundays game at Olympic called off an hour before kick off.

So all eyes turned to Tuesday’s game with League Champions in waiting, Upton, and the boys did everything asked of them and more.

Despite a lack of training ground practice the team challenged for every ball and matched Upton in all departments.

Despite going a goal down midway through the first half the team picked itself up and got straight back in the game. Jimmy Howe ran onto a through ball from Callum Mernock to draw the keeper and confidently slot the ball under him. This was yet another goal for the free scoring midfielder, Glenavon's Paul Scholes!!

Glenavon battled superbly in the second half but neither side could find the break through, although Glenavon had the ball in the net with ten minutes to go, from that boy Jimmy Howe again, the decision was given as offside.

The result showed what can be achieved by the boys and they are more than capable of competing with anybody.

From a management perspective, the difference within the team from the performances at the start of the season has improved 100%.

Danny Lamb was the nominated man of the match, and again "Carsley with Hair" showed superb strength in midfield, but the whole team showed Gary and me that next season we will continue to develop.

The Birkenhead News has reported that Gary is spending the summer scouting Europe (or is that just Birkenhead) for new signings, with a transfer kitty the size of which he will not disclose.

With a few games to play, all the squad will get a run out and a chance to push for places in the starting line up.

Ainslie on Target Again to Secure Points for Glenavon

16 Mar 2008

On a very wet pitch that had at least potentially three duck ponds down the middle of it, Glenavon made it another victory on their travels.

This again proved the strength of the squad when the team was missing regular Goalkeeper Ciaran Bryant who was unwell (get well soon Ciaran from all your team mates) and two of last weeks starting line up away on holiday. This led to a reshuffle of the pack and a number of excellent performances from boys playing in new positions.

The ever versatile Sean McAdam covered goalkeeping duties in the first half, with Michael Kukczykajtis going in for the second half. The strength of the teams performance was proven by the fact neither had a difficult save to make in a game of few chances for either team, due to the heavy pitch and the regularity of the ball getting stuck in the duck ponds.

When tested the defence stood strong with stand in centre back Callum Mernock having a solid game alongside Alex Kelly and David Roberts

Early pressure saw Lewis Deery and Aaron Steen get in some good positions, but the only goal of the game came from a terrific break from midfield by Steve Ainslie who beat the last defender for pace to fire home into the net. Three in three games for Steve who is having a great season.

The only scare in the second half came from a free kick by the home team that saw the ball brilliantly headed off the line by Jimmy Howe.

Indeed most noise from the away fans came from the red noses when they heard Everton were a goal down to Fulham.

Glenavon finished the stronger side with only the width of a post denying Jimmy Howe a goal.

Despite losing four points with the sad demise of Peninsula Stars the team continues to strengthen its position in the league, and the quality of the side improves in both its all round vision during the game and growing maturity in closing down sides when the game is tight.

Man of the Match was Danny Lamb who had an outstanding game in the centre of midfield. He won so many tackles in the defensive midfield role and broke play up that he is the teams Lee Carsley (only with hair).

Team – M.Kukczykajtis, S.McAdam, , D Roberts, J Howe, D. Lamb, S. Ainslie, J. Malone, , C.Mernock, L.Deery, P.Tombs A.Steen, A Kelly, R.Langton.

Glenavon Enjoy Away Day Win at Greenleas

9 Mar 2008

Glenavon continue to enjoy there away days with a very hard fought victory over Greeleas.

They made up for the disappointment of last weeks goalless draw by coming flying out of the starting blocks this weekend. On a full size pitch the boys made great use of the space to breach the home defence twice in the first ten minutes.

Jimmy Howe opened the scoring when he timed his run perfectly to arrive at the back post and finish with a shot across the keeper into the corner of the net.

Before the home side had time to settle Steve Ainslie hit the second goal when he was perfectly placed to hammer home as the ball bobbled around the box. It was just reward for a solid performance in midfield and he is making a great habit of poaching this type of goal.

The home side pushed for a quick reply but the team bedded in and could have increased their advantage when Lewis Deery went close.

Greenleas began the second half stronger and tested the Glenavon defence but the back four stood strong with some excellent saving tackles from Michael Kukczykajtis, Ben Eastwood, Shaun McAdam and Alex Jones who kept them at bay. The few times that the ball did get over the top of the defence goalkeeper Ciaran Bryant was off his line to confidently claim the ball.

The lead was reduced with ten minutes to go, and leave the away supporters a little nervous, but some strong tackling in the centre of midfield by Danny Lamb and Steve Ainslie ensured the score remained the same. Indeed Glenavon finished in the ascendancy and were unlucky not to increase their lead when late chances fell to Aaron Steen and Callum Mernock.

On a big pitch that wasn’t helped by the rainfall before the game the team performed exceptionally well. The match was won as a squad, as everybody played their part, and the team continues to look both fitter and stronger as the season progresses.

Man of the match was Michael Kukczykajtis who has an exceptional game at left back and didn’t miss a tackle all day.

Team – C.Bryant, M.Kukczykajtis, S.McAdam, B.Eastwood, D Roberts, J Howe, D. Lamb, S. Ainslie, J. Malone, A. Jones, C.Mernock, L.Deery, P.Tombs A.Steen,

Glenavon Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside.

24 Feb 2008

Glenavon 11’s certainly proved they do like to be beside the seaside with a comprehensive victory over New Brighton Saints.

The match allowed manager Gary Langton to fully utilise his squad rotation policy and give everybody a run out, and whilst it took the first 15 minutes to find its feet the side then clicked into action.

The first goal came from a Jimmy Howe penalty after he was tripped in the box when clean through, and the second again from the penalty spot was converted by Alex Kelly following a hand ball as Callum Mernock tried to get clear in the box. The third goal was scored by Callum Mernock who lost his marker from a corner to tuck the ball home and make the halftime score 3-0.

The second half started with a long range drive from Sean Macadam just going wide, but this was quickly improved on as he scored from the same distance a few minutes later. Aaron Steen made it five with a well taken finish in the box and Jimmy Howe got his second and Glenavon’s six with another good finish from a corner.

Whilst Glenavons traveling fans were sitting comfortably in their deckchairs and only worrying about what flavour ice cream to have, a long range shot from the Saints took a terrible bounce and crept past Glenavon stand in keeper Steve Ainslie.

Normal service was quickly resumed with a second goal from Aaron Steen, and a great finish from Alex Jones from a tight angle to make it 8-1.

A couple of late goals from New Brighton could not spoil the day out, and Glenavon added another victory to their impressive run of form on a day that saw all squad players get some quality time on the pitch.

Man of the Match for the second week running was ‘the Rock’ Sean McAdam, who this week played 30 minutes in goal as well as scoring his first goal of the season (only another nine to catch up Joleon Lescott)

Glenavon's Good Vein of Form Continues

Peninsula Stars

17 Feb 2008

Glenavon under 11’s winning run continued with a hard fought win over Peninsula Stars at the Glen. Following the previous weeks fluent football this win was achieved by delivering the other side of the coin and “winning Ugly”

Despite taking a very early lead when Jacob Malone poached a goal from close range following some confusion in the penalty area, Glenavon had to be prepared to grind out a result against a strong and determined Peninsular Stars team and despite half chances falling to both Callum Mernock and Alex Jones the first half finished 1-0

At the start of the second half only an excellent save from Ciaran Bryant kept Peninsular from equalising, chances fell to Jimmy Howe and Lewis Deery, but the second goal did not arrive until the final minute when Aaron Steen scored his first goal for the club to secure the win and ease the stress levels of the home support.

From a managerial perspective this was a great victory, whilst it is excellent to see the team develop and play well, sometimes it is harder not to perform as well as you can do, yet still be able to grind out a win. It is that resilience shown by the team this weekend which continues to highlight their development as a strong squad, and builds confidence for the future.

Man of the match was given to Sean McAdam who again was a rock in defence, and underlines what an excellent season he is having at centre back.

Team - C. Bryant, M.Kukczykajtis, S.McAdam, B. Eastwood, D. Roberts, J Howe, D. Lamb, S. Ainslie, J. Malone, A. Jones, C. Mernock, L. Deery, P. Tombs, A. Kelly, A. Steen

10 Feb 2008
An excellent all round team performance saw Glenavon record a 3-2 victory over third placed Beechwood Falcons.

On a full size pitch at Arrowe Park the side took full advantage of the space by playing a quality passing game that saw the team grow in confidence and create many chances early on, and the parents on the line mistakenly thinking they were watching Brazil!.

The first goal came from Jimmy Howe when he converted after good work from Alex Jones.

Glenavon continued to push forward and got a second from Steve Ainslie who hammered home from close range after good work by striker Callum Mernock.

The start of the second half saw a freak early goal direct from a corner reduce the lead to one goal, and as tiredness crept in the equaliser arrived eight minutes from time.

It was at this point that the team showed how much they have developed over the season and dug in. Excellent defending by Sean McAdam and Ben Eastwood kept the home team out and Glenavon got the win their performance deserved four minutes from time when Jacob Malone fired home after dancing round two defenders.

There was still time for an excellent full length save from keeper Ciaran Bryant to keep out Beechwood.

Its now five wins out of six for the team, as the boys continue to grow in ability as they make the transition from mini-soccer.

Man of the Match was midfielder Danny Lamb, but it was a game won by the 11 players and two substitutes when everybody played a part.

However it took a fine defensive performance from Olympic to deny Glenavon a richly deserved equaliser.
