Eagles came away with a comfortable 3-0 win today but it could have been a different story following a dire first half performance.
Rallied by Josh Saunders and Luke Dixon in particular they had just about limped to half time and a 'gentle' rollicking was awaiting them.
To the boys credit they improved greatly in the second half and goals by Jake Jones, Sean Griffiths and, scoring his first ever for the club (well...his first in the right end...) Ben Mitchell sealed the win.
I was impressed by the boys ability to turn around their performance with all the team putting in a gutsy second half performance but man of the Match Sean Ratchford pipped others for the award for the way he kept driving the team forward and his wicked corners which caused Ridgewoods defence no end of trouble.

It was great result for us today in the Presidents Cup, with a thumping 9-0 victory against New Brighton Saints.
It was a great return to form following a few disappointing results pre Christmas with Man of the match Sean Strenhouse leading the way with 4 goals from midfield.
Sean Griffiths bagged a hat-trick and Harry Cumming and Jake Jones completed the scoring.
It was a solid all round performance by the whole team and although the goalscorers will take the plaudits, the defence worked exceptionally hard to ensure their 7th clean sheet in 14 games so far this season.

The concern before the match was that we may become victims of over confidence. We have been unbeaten all season; Wirral had not won nor scored a goal and a few comments pre match about how easy it would be, made me fear the worst. As the boys will learn, no game is easy and you have got to work to earn the right to win.
We began the first half pressing from the off and had a number of good chances particularly down the left, but a combination of over elaborate passing, our insistence on shooting near post (when I have tried to drill home the message of shooting across the goalkeeper!!!) and a number of good saves by an outstanding opposition goalkeeper, meant we had been unable to break the deadlock. My worst fears appeared to be coming true.
Fortunately mid way through the half a good through ball by Sean Stenhouse freed Jack Larsen. Jack intelligently looked up and played a beautifully weighted cross ball across the area to the onrushing Jake Jones who slid in 6 yards out to poke the ball home back ACROSS the keeper. The goal was thoroughly deserved for his tireless efforts throughout the half.
We continued our domination but continued to be profligate and it looked like we heading in for half time at 1-0 when realistically it should have been 10!
Then in the last minute we won a corner. Jake swung over a beautifully flighted ball and there was Harry Cumming placing a stooping header into the corner of the net for his first of the season.
The second half began in a similar pattern to the first. Lots of possession…a plethora of chances…no further goals!
Finally with 10 minutes of the second half gone, we won in a free kick 5 yards outside the area. The ball was clipped in by Sean Griffiths and ghosting in at the back post was Sean Ratchford for our 3rd of the game and his 3rd of the season. Finally we were getting the reward for our pressure.
A good through ball from Ben Mitchell, who had supported the attacks well and with confidence (particularly as he had been able to have a relatively quiet time of it defensively), reached Jack on the edge of the area. He looked up and cut the ball across the face of the area for Sean G to open up his body and stroke the ball into the corner to reach double figures for the season
However to the boys credit they did not let up and in the last 5 minutes we came alive. Sean Ratchford signalled our intent with a thumping strike which rattled the bar.
Sean Stenhouse, who’s strong running on the right had been a feature of the game, crossed the ball to the far post and found Jack arriving at the back post to pop his 4th of the season. A particularly pleasing feature of the game was that Jack and Sean Ratchford have already surpassed their personal goals total for the whole of last season after only five games of this season AND Harry’s goal meant that all my midfield and strikers now have their names on the score sheet this season.
With 2 minutes left a good run through the centre of defence by Sean G forced a good save from Wirral’s goalkeeper, unfortunately for him his parry fell to the feet of Jack and he eagerly lashed the ball away for number 6.
The game was wrapped up in the last minute. A strong surging run by Harry from midfield finished with a skimming shot from well outside the area sliding past the goalie to give the scoreline a more realistic look than had been evident with 6 minutes to go.
I should add I felt particularly sorry for our Goalkeeper Luke Dixon, who had quite literally nothing to do and also for our staunch last man back Josh, who often sacrifices personal glory to ensure we are not caught short at the back. I should have offered them the chance to get forward to be more involved, but did not think about it until it was too late. Should we ever be so dominant again I will ensure they take a more active part.
So in the end an emphatic victory, which for you statistic fans out there means we have now scored as many goals in five games this season as we did in the WHOLE of our first season with me as manager.
Impressed? You bet I am!

We approached this game confident in our ability to beat Wirral following our victory over them in the cup the previous week. However, I think some of Wirral’s tough tackling in the previous games was on some of the boys mind and as a result our first half performance was a little tepid at times.
We started really strongly and within a minute we had taken the lead. Jack Larsen followed up a strong shot from Jake Jones and thinking quickly, took it off the goal keepers fingers, turned and thumped the ball home from close range. It was a great start but we never kicked on from here and soon found ourselves being pegged back.
Defensively we were sound, Josh Saunders, continuing his long run of excellent form, and Ben Mitchell, playing with great strength and discipline, provided a solid barrier in front of ever dependable Luke Dixon, who when occasion demanded filled the team with confidence with his safe handling and judgement.
We nearly made it to halftime with a lead but their best player punted a hopeful lob high into the air toward our goal. Luke was unsighted by the glare of the sun and although he made a brave attempt to stop it whilst back-peddling furiously, the ball squeezed in between his outstretched had and the crossbar to equalize. The fact this was our first goal conceded in the league speaks volumes of the defensive strength of the team this year.
At half time I sensed the Wirral tackling was intimidating a few of our players, but a quick ‘chat’ at half time hopefully set the boys thoughts straight.
It wasn’t long after the restart before a typical strong run by Harry Cummings preceded a crisp cross which found Sean Griffiths at the near to the near post. Sean rode a tackle from the defender to turn quickly and slam the ball home.
Soon after a quick counter from midfield saw the ball being played through by the energetic Jake Jones to Sean G who rounded the goalie by moving the ball right foot to left and slotted the ball home.
A fourth goal threatened and soon came. Sean G ran in from the right wing, drew the keeper out and rolled it to Sean Stenhouse who had run the length of the pitch to support. Sten stopped the ball and steadied himself before confidently sweeping the ball past the keeper. It capped a fine return performance by Sean following a long layoff.
Comfortable now, we went looking for more but a little over exuberance left us short at the back with only Luke and Harry facing 5 attackers. With their front line closing in Harry stood strong made a thunderous block tackle. The ball ran to Sean Sten who quickly looked up and saw Sean G racing away. Griff rounded the keeper but his first shot was saved on the line by a retreating defender, but the ball rebounded kindly to him and he thumped it home to claim his second hat-trick in two games.
This was another immensely satisfying win and more importantly a great team performance. 4 games in, 19 goals scored and only four conceded...I don’t think I could have asked for a better start to the season.

Fate...what a wicked and playful mistress she is…!
We were drawn for our first game of the Knock-Out cup against Wirral Rangers who we played in the final of the Presidents cup last year and beat soundly.
A check over last years stats revealed they were to be no push over having lost and drawn against them last year as well in the league.
We made a good start and we were soon rewarded when Mr Versatile, Sean Ratchford, scored his second of the season. Sean hit a speculative effort from distance which took a wicked bounce to confuse the goalkeeper and dropped into the far corner.
Wirral quickly equalised after some rare confusion in our defence and for a period thereafter we were under pressure and looking the most likely to concede. However keeper Luke Dixon stood up to the onslaught staunchly with a combination of some good saves and tremendous anticiption.
A quick breakaway put us back in the driving seat. A smart ball out of defence gave Sean Griffiths a one on one with their last defender. He cleverly lifted the ball over and past the onrushing defender and then surprisingly hit an early shot from distance which the goalie looked to have covered. However a lucky bounce (perhaps hitting the same divot as Ratch’s earlier effort) deceived the goalie and put us back in the lead.
Wirral then showed great spirit and mounted another comeback to draw level at 2-2 and take us shakily up to half time.
In the first half Wirral had dished out some vicious tackles on the boys and this treatment continued in the second half with some particularly nasty tackles on Harry Cumming and Jake Jones. This lead to the removal of one of their players and the ref stopping the game to speak to the opposition about their behaviour.
Unpeturbed, this served to act as an incentive to the Eagles. They reacted in the proper fashion and instead of retaliating, they were driven on to a stirring second half performance.
Sean Griffiths crashed his second into the top corner following good work from a Harry Cumming, who put in another tireless display and Jack Larsen, who had covered so much ground to provide both defensive cover and lend support to the attack.
Then, from yet another of Jake Jones probing corners, Sean G was on hand again to poke home from close range to grab his first hat-trick of the season.
Unfortunately Wirral were still not finished and began putting us under further pressure. They were held at bay by strong defensive work from Josh Saunders who has been near un-beatable this season and his partner Ben Mitchell. He demonstrated great strength and trade mark tough tackling, which combined with some lung busting work from the midfield quartet and the lightning quick reflexes of Luke enabled us to keep them at bay.
Disappointingly, they eventually did break through from a free kick to make the score 4-3 which ensured a twitchy final few moments.
The boys then showed great composure to steady the ship and soon surged back forward. Sean G had a great opportunity to kill the game off but remarkably, after rounding the goalie and only 8 yards out with an empty net beckoning, somehow managed to roll the ball wide. But he made amends second later when he smashed the ball into the top corner following slack defensive work by Wirral, to claim his forth and our fifth to finally put the tie to bed.
So… yet another excellent performance under very difficult circumstances from the boys. It’s fair to say they were given their toughest game of the season but they responded in excellent fashion to show the mental and physical strength to take a deserved place in the next round of the cup.

Sat 29 Sept 2007 |
Following a good start to the season the pressure was on to see if we could carry last weeks form forward. Robbed of Sean Stenhouse and Luke Dixon we were down to a bare minimum 7, but I had every confidence in the boys.
Once again the boys started strong, taking the game to Upton from the first minute, creating chance after chance. And it wasn’t long before Jake Jones opened up the scoring with another clean strike to put the ball in the back of the net, following fine football from his team-mates.
Jack Larsen popped up shortly after in typical poacher fashion to ’lash’ the ball home from oh, at least a good yard out to give us a deserved 2-0 lead.
We played the rest of the half out well in control. Ben Mitchell and Josh Saunders in defence were troubled rarely but when a threat arose great positioning and rapidly improving communication between the two quickly dealt with the situation.
The second half began in a similar fashion with the Eagles on the front foot. Harry Cumming drove the play forward from midfield and provided a number of excellent passes to create good opportunities. One of these passes freed Sean Griffiths to lay on the ball to Jack Larsen. He again had found a wonderful position at the back post and did what Jack does best and popped it calmly home.
We were well in control now and it wasn’t long before the final nail was hammered into the rapidly closing lid of Upton’s coffin. Again incisive passing freed Jake who smashed the ball home clinically to cap a fine all round personal performance. Special mention should be made that Jake had produced a string of quality corners all afternoon, thankfully nullifying my gripe from last week.
We had a further number of opportunities to add to that tally but profligacy in front of goal by Sean Griffiths, who, other than that, had displayed excellent forward play in leading the line all through the match, ensured that the score stayed the same.
For all our dominance we had a late scare when Rangers came close. Both Josh and Ben went to block possibly Upton’s only shot and deflected the ball. Sean Ratchford, who up until that point, had been able to have a very quiet game deputising for Luke, showed great levels of concentration and dived spectacularly to tip an awkward bouncing ball onto the bar and out for a corner ensuring us a second clean sheet on the run.
It was another fine victory by the boys who again demonstrated fantastic teamwork and some wonderful passing. They attack as a team and defend as a team and work so hard for each other. As a manager it’s great to see. Keep up the good work boys.

The Delph - Sat 22 Sept 2007 |
This was a disappointing result for the boys on Saturday. They did everything that they possibly could to try and score an equalizer, but it just was, not to be.
Our striker, Steven Lynch, had numerous opportunities to score, but the post denied him twice. He also hit the bar three times, but it was one of the games were it did, not matter what we did it was just not going to happen for the boys.
We also had a couple of long range shots from our full backs Joe Salusbury, and Ethan Forster. They can both hit the ball very hard, but it went wide, or the opponents keeper got a hand to it.
Ridgewood's two goals were scored in the first half of the game. The first was well taken, with our keeper managing to get a hand to the ball, but it just sneaked over the line.
The second was sheer luck. A corner was taken from the left hand side. The ball managed to swing in close to the upright and, with no player managing to get a final touch, the ball ended up in the back of the net.
At half time, all I could say to the players was to keep trying, and hopefully we could turn the game around. We did manage to score a goal, to make it 2-1, but the referee said that the ball had not crossed the line. Even though the side netting was moving from were the ball had rebounded back out from goal, for the keeper to collect.
But still the boys pushed very hard for the goals that we needed. Our mid field boys, Niall, Jake, Alex and Joe ran there hearts out in the second half, and eventually we got the goal that we deserved. Joe Wingfield buried a high volleyed shot from 20 yards to make it 2-1.
After we scored our goal it was constant pressure in the opponents half. The ball never moved out of their half for about 8 minutes. But after all that pressure in their goal mouth, and with the two full backs coming up too assist, we couldn't get that last goal that we thoroughly deserved to even things up.
The boys played hard and fought hard but were also very fair. I was very pleased with their work rate and commitment. They were a credit to Glenavon Football Club.
Our man of the match was Jake Beardsmore, a constant threat to our opponents goal down the right.

The Delph - Sat 22 Sept 2007 |
Ah, the beginning of a new season, you could almost see the excitement in the air never mind just feel it.
After a decent pre-season we would now see how the boys reacted to playing in 40 minute games.
We started pretty well and kept the lion share of possession. We were pressuring Ridgewood’s defence but we just couldn't provide the killer ball.
Any threat that came from Ridgewood was being dealt with comfortably by the defensive pairing of Ben Mitchell and Josh Saunders and what little that bypassed those two was mopped up by efficiently by Luke Dixon in goal.
However, with 10 minutes gone the breakthrough came. A lovely sweeping move from the right ended with Jake Jones drilling the ball left footed into the far left hand corner of the goal. From here we seemed to relax and were able to step up a gear.
The second goal followed shortly after. Good work on the right saw the ball slipped through to Sean Griffiths who, with a defender advancing, quickly slipped the ball right foot to left to despatch a shot coolly into the back of the net.
Following this it became one-way traffic. The midfield of Jack Larsen, Harry Cumming and Sean Ratchford worked tirelessly to control the game, blocking off any threat before it began and setting up a plethora of opportunities.
Throughout the course of the game we earned in excess of 20 corners, but disappointingly we never truly looked like scoring from them…until… early in the second half a defensive mix up allowed the ball to fall to Sean G who gratefully swept the ball home for 3-0.
After this chance after chance fell our way, but it took a slight deflection from a Sean Ratchford long angled cross to divert the ball over the head of their keeper and into the back of the net.
As the end of the game approached both sides were tiring but Jake Jones capped off a fine performance with a smart finish to make the score line truly reflect our dominance.
All in all, a very solid (and tiring) 40 minutes with some good individual displays, but most pleasing of all was the way the team combined as a unit, to produce a thoroughly deserved victory.

The Delph - Sat 15th Sept 2007 |
Glenavon U10 Hawks got off to a real flyer on Saturday, winning 11-0 against New Brighton Saints Rovers. Goals were going in that thick, and fast, I couldn't keep up with them.
This was the first time that the Hawks had played 20 mins each way, and they certainty new it when the game was over.
The team who played were as follows:
1. Will Kelly Goal - Keeper
2. Ethan Forster - Centre Back
3. Joe Salsbury - Centre Back
4. Niall Kielty - Left Side Midfield
5. Jake Beardsmore - Right Side Midfield
6. Joe Wingfield - Centre Midfield
7. Alex Parr - Centre Forward
The Goals came from Joe Wingfield (who scored 5 goals, was our MOM, and was absolutely brilliant), Joe Salsbury, Niall Kielty and Ethan Forster all popped up with 2 goals each.
Our keeper, Will Kelly, asked if he could come out of goal and swap with another player, because he was so bored. The ball hardly ever came out of the opponents box.
Alex Parr, who was up front on his own, also set up 5 of our goals for the goal scorers.
Jake Beardsmore, who was up and down the flanks, could of also had a hat trick of goals him self in the first half, but for some good goal keeping from the other team.
Jake and Will swapped there shirts in the second half, so that Will could actually play some football.
Over all a very good team performance, and long may it last.
