Once Again...Parents are Asked Not to Park at the Solly
|

Glenavon parents are asked to be more considerate when parking cars at The Glen and The Solly.
Cars should be parked such that pathways on the Glen are kept clear at all times to enable emergency access.
Please do not to park in the lane leading upto The Solly. Use the Glen car park.
Areas adjacent to equipment containers on the Glen must also be kept clear to allow movement of goals and equipment.
Parking at the Solly has now become such a concern that parents are now being warned that their child's continued involvement with the club could be in jeopardy.
Team managers are requested to make visiting opponents aware of the problems inconsiderate car parking can cause.

Glenavon Demands Respect
4 May 2009 |

Respect is The FA’s programme to address unacceptable behaviour in football – on and off the pitch.
On average, 7,000 referees quit football every year because of the abuse they receive from players and from the sidelines.
Lots of children also pack it in because of the attitude and actions of over-enthusiastic and pushy parents.
As a charter standard club Glenavon JFC fully supports the principles and aims of this important campaign. We demand that our players parents supporters and officials meet the high standards expected of a well respected club such as ours.
We have a club Code of Conduct, a copy of which, is given out with every player signing on form at the beginning of the season. It is extremely important that this document be read and clearly understood by parents and players alike.
The Glenavon JFC Code of Conduct can be viewed by clicking this link. Glenavon Code of Conduct.
The FA have a wealth of information on their Respect programme on their website at www.thefa.com.
Glenavon have summarised some of the main points of the campaign. These can be viewed here. |
Lancelyn Secure Division Title in Last Match Showdown
4 May 2009 |

Lancelyn Glenavon have secured the Wirral Sunday League Premier Division title in a "winner takes all" game against New Ferry Wirral Hotel.
New Ferry trailed league leaders, Lancelyn, by two points going into the final game of the season at Cammell Lairds. Lancelyn required only a single point to land the silverware.
The league leaders trailed 1-0 at half time with New Ferry looking likely to hold on and get the 3 points they needed.
As the game wore on Lancelyn continued to push for the goal they needed. The New Ferry keeper made a number of crucial saves to keep his sides hopes alive.
With the game drawing to a close Lancelyn drew level with a goal from Martin Reeve. They subsequently took the lead through a bizarre own goal and took all three points.

U10 Hawks Miss Out on Pens
7 May 2009 |

Glenavon U10 Hawks have narrowly missed out on silverware in the Wallasey Junior League Challenge Cup by virtue of a penalty shoot out.
Here is team manager Ian Hughes' report on the game:
"When you wish your team could play there best football of the season then this was the game for it to happen and to lose out on penalties is really cruel.
The setting for this game was superb with the Ingleborough pitches a delight. And was so was the way the Hawks started with Mattie Howe heading home from another superb corner from Alex.
Wallasey Wanderers responded with a superbly well taken goal that left Tom U with no chance 1-1. Half time came and went and still the Hawks pressed with Endo dictating play in the middle and Josh terrorising the left back. Mattie, Jack, Ben and Jordo so composed at the back and Tom playing a superb strikers role. It was a complete shock that Wallasey went in front with a scrappy near post tap in!
When you coach this side you know that they will never give up and 3 mins from the end Jordo’s shot was parried right into Tom’s path who didn’t panic and slotted home well to tie up the game!
Extra time and it was all Hawks with Josh hitting a screamer that was destined for the top corner only for the keeper to pull off the save of the game to deny the superb Hawks.
Penalties followed and unfortunately Wallasey converted theirs and we didn’t, a really cruel way to lose and the Wallasey manager enforced this by saying his team had been played off the park! Many thanks to all Glenavon supporters who made such a massive difference for the lads.
MOM : Tom U, Ben, Jack W, Mattie, Jordo, Endo, Alex, Josh, Tom H."
Commiserations to the Hawks, but well done on such a fine display. |

WJL Challenge Cup Final – The Glen
Glenavon U11's have secured the Wallesey Junior League Challenge Cup. The boys took full advantage of the home venue coming out 5-2 winners against opponents Upton FC.
Here is a match report from proud team manager, Alan Griffiths'
"It was a beautiful night for the final. The sun was shining, the birds were singing and the pitch was immaculate. It had all the all the ingredients for a great final.
Our opponents were a very fine Upton team, who had completed a league double over us, earlier in the season and who had secured 2nd place in the league just this week.
However from the moment I arrived and saw the determination on the boys faces, all my worries and nerves that I’d been suffering throughout the day (and during the course of a sleepless Saturday night) evaporated quickly. They’d been here before having appeared in 3 finals in the last 2 years and knew what was expected. They were relaxed and, more importantly, totally up for it… and how…!
The boys totally dominated the first half and within 5 minutes were 1 – 0 up. A fine corner from the right by Joe Wingfield caused confusion in the Upton defence and there was Sean Griffiths, Johnny on the Spot, to lash the ball home.
Upton seemed to visibly wilt, but I suppose when faced with the intensity with which the boys were playing it wasn’t all that surprising.
A fine through ball from Wingy set Jake Beardsmore through. He used his pace and strength to hold off their centre back and then coolly despatched the ball over their advancing keeper.
A third soon followed when, after good pressure by the forward line, Stevie Lynch charged down a clearance and directed the ball into the net.
Though the forward line had claimed the plaudits so far, this was the finest half of football the whole team had put in throughout the season and it was the midfield and defence who were providing the foundation for the lead with their hard work making them appear impenetrable. As such we were able to take a 3-0 lead to half time.
The second half began as it ended with more strong play from Glenavon but as expected Upton began to make a comeback and goalkeeper Luke Dixon had to be alert and on his toes to clear the danger on a couple of occasions.
However it was Glenavon who added to the scoring next. A beautifully flighted free kick from Wingy was steered into the net with a back post volley by Sean Griffiths, his second of the game.
With 20 minutes to play we were looking comfortable, but then Upton scored after we had conceded a poor free kick.
A slight doubt entered both mine and assistant Mark Borrill’s mind but these were soon dispelled by a cool finish from an acute angle by Sean Stenhouse following his fine run down the left wing.
Upton rallied for a second goal with minutes remaining, but by then the result was almost assured. Even after that set back the boys recovered quickly and were able to maintain their focus and continue their tireless work rate to see out the final few minutes and eventually run out worthy winners in a 5-2 victory.
Man of the match was Harry Cumming who put in a typically accomplished and hard working performance
So, well done…to not only the Team, but also to the parents who have provided such wonderful support both on and off the pitch for the boys as well as to myself and Mark. The result was the cherry on the cake of what has been a hugely enjoyable and successful season for the under 11’s."
Congratulations to the boys, Alan and Mark on this fantastic achievement in what has been their first league season.

Glenavon Tournament Success Undermined by Mindless Idiots
26 June 2009 |

The good news is that Glenavon's summer tournament has been hailed as a tremendous success and has received a fantastic amount of praise from those taking part.
All the hard work put in by tournament organiser Tony Morgan, Ian Hughes, Glenavon U10's parents and many other willing volunteers has really paid off. The event raised over £3000 towards club funds. Congratulations to all concerned!
And now for the bad news... The actions of a number of mindless idiots has resulted in the success of the tournament being overshadowed.
On the Sunday evening the portable toilets were set alight. All four were completely destroyed. The fire seriously damaged the nearby storage container and its contents. Goals, corner flags and other vital equipment will need to be replaced with the bill running into the thousands of pounds.
The club is also liable for the cost of replacing the toilets as we were not insured against fire. The hire company are insisting that we foot the bill. This will place a massive strain on the clubs resources.
Following a report in the Liverpool Echo we have received a tremendous number of messages of sympathy and support from many local organisations. Not only from those in the local football community but Wirral Borough Council, a darts club and local business's.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who have shown concern and support.
Already there are plans to raise funds and help the club through this crisis under the banner 'Glenavon in Need'.
Let's hope we can put this disaster behind us and prepare for the new season with a certain amount of optimism.
Should anyone have any information regarding the fire, which would help the police, please contact the Laird Street Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0151 709 6010 or email - Ward.A.Oxton@merseyside.police.uk.

10 May 2009 - WJL KO Cup Final
"After a nervous start Glenavon settled into their passing game and immediately started to cause Future problems, Walker and McCallister being the main threats.
The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes with McCallister chipping the keeper after good work from Jones and Walker. Five minutes later Walker disposessed a Future defender went on a mazey run to score the second with a great finish. Glenavon were now in the driving seat. Walker made it 3-0 just before half time with another sublime finish. The second half saw Glenavon sit back a bit. Watterson, a half time sub, gave them some relief with an injection of pace. After soaking up some pressure Watterson went on a run and brilliantly lobbed the Future keeper making it 4-0 to the now rampant Glenavon. The fifth came straight from a corner kick by Ponton giving Future no chance. Future gained a consolation goal in the dying minutes but the game was all over by then.
This was a great display of football and commitment from the U15's making them outright cup winners. Many thanks to the lads and everyone concerned this season."
Congratulations to Glenavon U15's on their fantastic achievement.

Lads v Dads at The Glen
21 May 2009 |

The Glen recently played host to a Glenavon U12 Lads v Dads game in the presence of former Everton player and current pro Danny Cadamateri. U12 Manager Nick Mernock takes up the story:
"Following their heartbreaking defeat on penalties in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup, the stakes in the under 12’s season closing Dads v Lads fixture at the Glen on Tuesday night, were raised by the inclusion in the Dads' team of former Everton star and current Huddersfield Town striker Danny Cadamarteri.
Danny, now the under 12’s highest profile supporter, kindly risked getting a good kicking by the boys and played his part with a couple of goals in a competitive 8-8 draw, which also saw some over zealous desire to win by certain fathers who will remain nameless.
Two fine saves by guest Dads goalkeeper Paddy Woods, got Danny out of trouble after he missed in the penalty shoot out, and saw the Dads win on penalties 4-3.
Thanks to Dan for giving the boys (and indeed the Dads) a great night." |
