Motorbikes Threaten Safety at the Glen... and Not for the First Time.

26 July 2009

Once again the Glen is plagued by selfish motorbike owners who seem only too happy to use our home venue as a race track, churning up the playing surfaces and endangering the safety of those using the facilities.

These people seem to believe that Glenavon football club are operating a speedway track at the Glen just for their enjoyment.

We must ask that ALL Glenavon families and supporters be the eyes and ears of the club. Keep hounding the police and let them know what is happening at our home ground.

Please don't leave it for someone else to take action. Phone the police and report the bikers. They are ruining pitches which are maintained with your hard earned subs.

The club is doing everything it can to restrict unauthorised access to the Glen with new gates and fencing. However there are those who are prepared to cut chains and padlocks to get on there for fly tipping or motorbike riding.

Keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activities at the Glen to the police.

Maybe you can even raise our plight with your local councillor. The more dissenting voices the better.

Glenavon Demands Respect

4 May 2009

Respect is The FA’s programme to address unacceptable behaviour in football – on and off the pitch.

On average, 7,000 referees quit football every year because of the abuse they receive from players and from the sidelines.

Lots of children also pack it in because of the attitude and actions of over-enthusiastic and pushy parents.

As a charter standard club Glenavon JFC fully supports the principles and aims of this important campaign. We demand that our players parents supporters and officials meet the high standards expected of a well respected club such as ours.

We have a club Code of Conduct, a copy of which, is given out with every player signing on form at the beginning of the season. It is extremely important that this document be read and clearly understood by parents and players alike.

The Glenavon JFC Code of Conduct can be viewed by clicking this link. Glenavon Code of Conduct.

The FA have a wealth of information on their Respect programme on their website at www.thefa.com.

Glenavon have summarised some of the main points of the campaign. These can be viewed here.

Once Again...Parents are Asked Not to Park at the Solly

Glenavon parents are asked to be more considerate when parking cars at The Glen and The Solly.

Cars should be parked such that pathways on the Glen are kept clear at all times to enable emergency access.

Please do not to park in the lane leading upto The Solly. Use the Glen car park.

Areas adjacent to equipment containers on the Glen must also be kept clear to allow movement of goals and equipment.

Parking at the Solly has now become such a concern that parents are now being warned that their child's continued involvement with the club could be in jeopardy.

Team managers are requested to make visiting opponents aware of the problems inconsiderate car parking can cause.

Glenavon Social Raises £400

30 Nov 2009

Glenavon JFC's Christmas Social was held at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday November 28th.

In spite of another relatively low turnout the fundraiser was able to raise £405 towards club funds. A good time was had by all, the majority of those attending wearing 70's fancy dress.

Well done and thank you to all who attended on the night, donated raffle prizes and bought raffle tickets. Your support is invaluable and most appreciated.

The 'do' was a great send off for Anne Sullivan who is stepping down from her role as Glenavon Social secretary at the end of 2009. Her work over the five years in the position, organising club fundraising events, has been a huge success with thousands of pounds being raised towards running our club.

We must express our sincere thanks to Anne for all her efforts. Thank you to all the age group social committee representatives who have helped Anne along the way.

Thanks to the bar staff at TRFC and DJ John Knapman.

Sun Valley kindly provided snacks, continuing their much appreciated support of our club.

Anne will be a hard act to follow. We are now looking for someone to step into her shoes as the club Social Secretary. Any volunteers?

We are confident that you will all continue to give your support to her successor whilst raising funds to keep our club afloat.

Boys Receive 'Glenavon in Need' Reward

30 Nov 2009

The Glenavon JFC fundraiser 'Glenavon in Need' took place on Saturday 12th September at Old Parks RUFC club in Holm Lane. We can now reveal that the funds raised have now exceeded the £6000 mark.

The bill for replacement of equipment and storage containers lost in the Solly Rec. fire in June came to around £4000 leaving a surplus of £2000.

It was agreed by the Glenavon JFC committee that this surplus be used to give each of the 190 players at the club a £10 bonus towards the cost of training gear or a winter coat.

Each age group at the club has now received a cheque or a deposit into their team fund equal to £10 per player.

Once again, well done to to Tony and Sylvia Morgan and all the parents who put in so much effort to ensure the success of the event.

The club wishes to express its sincere thanks to all who have helped us to replace damaged equipment and provide the boys with their gift.

Glenavon Website Reaches a Milestone

18 Nov 2009

Glenavonjfc.com, the home of Glenavon Junior Football club on the worldwide web, has reached a momentous milestone. During the two years in which website has been live we have had over 50,000 visits. This equates to around 500 hits per week.

Not bad for a Website with a potential readership limited to around 300. Our website appears to be popular outside the club, not only in this country but also throughout the globe. We have had hits registered from as far a-field as North America and Australia.

Thank you to all of our regular visitors and welcome to those of you who are first time readers. We aim to provide you with all the information you need about Glenavon JFC.

Please let us know if there are any items you would like to to see on the site. You may want to write a match report from one of your own games.

Once again thank you for your support.

Despite Low Turn-out, Race Night Brings in Vital Funds

18 Oct 2009

Despite a low turnout the Glenavon JFC Race Night, held at Tranmere Rovers, can be hailed a remarkable success.

Due to a tremendous effort by those in attendance the Club coffers profited to the tune of £700.

This is a fantastic amount in what were very challenging circumstances. The numbers were sadly well below expectation.

On behalf of the players at the club, who will all benefit from the additional funds, we would like to thank those who so generously contributed to the amount raised. Your raffle prize donations and your financial support were essential in reaching our goal.

Thank you to John from Neston Nomads who so ably assisted 'MC' for the evening, Bill Price. Well done Bill by the way.

Thanks to Anne Hurst and Mandy Travis who sold the raffle tickets.

The staff at TRFC even played their part and bought some race tickets.

Well done to Anne and Lynn who did a fine job folding raffle tickets, counting coins and selling programme's at the door.

Once again Sun Valley kindly provided snacks, continuing their much appreciated support of our club.

Finally, congratulations to Anne Sullivan on yet another great achievement in raising the vital funds that this club needs to stay afloat.

'Glenavon in Need' is Tremendous Success

13 Sep 2009

The Glenavon JFC fundraiser 'Glenavon in Need' is being hailed as a major triumph for the club, its players and parents. The event took place on Saturday 12th September at Old Parks RUFC club in Holm Lane.

Originally the idea of U11's manager Tony Morgan, the funds raised have exceeded £6000. This was the estimated damage caused by the blaze following the club's tournament at Solly Rec in June.

All those attending on the night had a great time enjoying the barbecue food, raffles, bingo and video racing.

DJ for the night, Paul Rice from WJL club FC Blades, did a marvelous job working tirelessly through a packed schedule. And all for free. The club must express its sincere thanks to Paul for his hard work and generosity.

As the night progressed the clubs members had the opportunity to thank those who have been so generous in supporting our cause. They were brought on stage to present their donations to club chair Bill Price.

Well done to to Tony, Sylvia and all the U11's parents who put in so much effort to ensure the success of the event.

Special thanks to John Killen and Gary O'Keefe who braved the dark and the heat to cook the food.

Well done to all who were so generous on the night, buying tickets for the raffle and the racing.

Thanks to Old Parks Rugby Club who offered us the use of their clubhouse for free.

Once again the club wishes to express its sincere thanks to all of you who have helped us reach our goal.

Where Are They Now

8 Oct 2009

Since Glenavon JFC was established way back in 1992 we estimate that over 500 players can claim they have represented the club at some stage.

Some of the lads playing for us right through from the tender age of 6, onto the U16's and our youth sides. Some just can't say goodbye and are now playing for last season’s Wirral Premier League champions Lancelyn Glenavon.

We have been doing some research and we have tracked down two of our past players who have graduated into the upper reaches of the game. Joe Collister who is with Tranmere Rovers and Glenn Rule who is now plying his trade at Chester City.

Joe played for Glenavon under the management of Dave Hawthorne, achieving multiple league and cup honours in his time at the club.

Joe Collister - Tranmere Rovers

Joe has been with TRFC since the age of 15. He signed professional papers in the summer of 2009 at the age of 17.

He recently made his first professional league appearance in the 2-1 defeat at Exeter City. First choice keeper Luke Daniels knee injury gifted Joe a place in the starting line-up.

Joe played in the Pre-season friendly versus Preston North End, making some fine saves in addition to making a late penalty save.

Glenn Rule signed for Glenavon in 1996 at six years of age. Under the management of Ged Gomez and Tony Macklin he played in the squad which went a whole season, comprising of over 50 games, remaining unbeaten.

He remained at the club until he joined Tranmere when he was 10.

Glenn Rule - Chester City

Glenn broke through from the Chester Youth side late last season and was awarded a 1 year professional contract in Oct 2008 with an option on a second year.

Chester City (Glenn first from right on front row)

At the time of writing he has made a total of 33 professional appearances for Chester City.

Best wishes to Joe and Glenn from Glenavon JFC at the start of what we hope are long, successful careers.

If you know of any other former players who have gone on to join senior clubs let us know and we will give them a mention.
